What is the meniscus?

It is called the meniscus of the knee. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as a pair of C-shaped pads of fibrocartilage in the knee.

What it is

  • A pair of C-shaped pads of fibrocartilage in the knee.
  • One on each side of the joint — medial and lateral menisci.
  • Deepen the top of the tibia and cushion the joint.

Where it is

  • Between the femur and tibia inside the knee joint.
  • Attached to the top of the tibia at their ends.
  • Their outer edges are thicker than their inner edges.
