What is the pons?

It is called the pons. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as a rounded bulge on the front of the brainstem.

What it is

  • A rounded bulge on the front of the brainstem.
  • Its name means 'bridge' in Latin.
  • Contains tracts that link the cerebrum with the cerebellum.

Where it is

  • Between the midbrain above and the medulla oblongata below.
  • In front of the cerebellum.
  • Gives origin to the trigeminal, abducens, facial, and vestibulocochlear nerves.
