What is the brainstem?

The the brainstem is called the brainstem. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as the stalk of the brain that connects the cerebrum and cerebellum to the spinal cord.

What it is

  • Made up of the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata.
  • Controls many involuntary functions such as breathing and heart rate.

Where it is

  • At the base of the brain.
  • Passes through the foramen magnum to continue as the spinal cord.
  • Gives origin to most of the cranial nerves.
