The the elbow joint is called the elbow joint. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as a hinge-type synovial joint.

What it is

  • Formed between the humerus above and the ulna and radius below.
  • Allows bending (flexion) and straightening (extension) of the arm.

Where it is

  • Between the upper arm and the forearm.
  • Reinforced by strong ligaments on each side.
  • Enclosed in a common capsule with the joint that allows the radius to rotate.
