The the colon is called the colon. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as the main portion of the large intestine.
What it is

- Divided into four parts: ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid.
- Absorbs most of the water from the intestinal contents.
Where it is
- Frames the coils of the small intestine.
- Runs up the right side, across the top, and down the left side of the abdomen.
- Ends at the rectum.
