What is the ankle joint?
The the ankle joint is called the ankle joint. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as a hinge-type synovial joint.
What it is
- A hinge-type synovial joint.
- Formed between the lower ends of the tibia and fibula above and the talus below.
- Allows the foot to point up (dorsiflexion) and down (plantarflexion).
Where it is
- Between the leg and the foot.
- The medial malleolus of the tibia and lateral malleolus of the fibula form a socket for the talus.
- Reinforced by strong medial and lateral ligaments.
