What is the ankle joint?

The the ankle joint is called the ankle joint. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as a hinge-type synovial joint.

What it is

  • A hinge-type synovial joint.
  • Formed between the lower ends of the tibia and fibula above and the talus below.
  • Allows the foot to point up (dorsiflexion) and down (plantarflexion).

Where it is

  • Between the leg and the foot.
  • The medial malleolus of the tibia and lateral malleolus of the fibula form a socket for the talus.
  • Reinforced by strong medial and lateral ligaments.
