What is the Achilles tendon?

The Achilles tendon is called the Achilles tendon (tendo calcaneus). Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as the thickest and strongest tendon in the body.

Where it is

  • At the back of the ankle.
  • Attaches to the back of the calcaneus (heel bone).
