What is the right ventricle?

The right ventricle is called the right ventricle. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as the lower right chamber of the heart.

What it is

  • The lower right chamber of the heart.
  • Has a thinner wall than the left ventricle.
  • Pumps deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary artery to reach the lungs.

Where it is

  • In the front of the heart, forming most of its front surface.
  • Receives blood from the right atrium through the tricuspid valve.
  • Empties into the pulmonary trunk through the pulmonary valve.
