What is the pulmonary valve?

The pulmonary valve is called the pulmonary valve. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as a three-cusp valve at the base of the pulmonary trunk.

What it is

  • A three-cusp valve at the base of the pulmonary trunk.
  • Prevents blood from flowing back into the right ventricle.
  • Opens with each ventricular contraction and closes as the ventricle relaxes.

Where it is

  • Between the right ventricle and the pulmonary trunk.
  • Sits at the top of the right ventricle.
  • Its closure contributes to the second heart sound.
