What is the nasal cavity?

The nasal cavity is called the nasal cavity. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as the large air-filled space behind the nose.

What it is

  • The large air-filled space behind the nose.
  • Divided in the midline by the nasal septum.
  • Warms, moistens, and filters incoming air.

Where it is

  • Above the roof of the mouth and below the base of the skull.
  • Opens in front through the nostrils and behind into the nasopharynx.
  • Its walls carry three curved shelves called conchae.
