What is the ilium?

The large upper part of the hip bone is called the ilium. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as the largest of the three parts of the hip bone.

  • Its upper edge (the iliac crest) can be felt as the top of the hip.
  • Forms the broad, wing-like blade of the hip.

Where it is

  • At the top and outer side of the hip bone.
  • Joins the sacrum behind at the sacroiliac joint.
