What is the femoral artery?

The femoral artery is called the femoral artery. Gray's Anatomy (1918) describes it as the main artery of the thigh.

What it is

  • The main artery of the thigh.
  • A continuation of the external iliac artery.
  • Its pulse can be felt in the groin.

Where it is

  • Enters the thigh at the mid-inguinal point.
  • Passes down the front and inner side of the thigh.
  • Becomes the popliteal artery behind the knee.
